Sheffield United have not played a minute since early March after the league was suspended, in an attempt to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

But many, including boss Chris Wilder, believe that the return of football will be a valuable morale booster for the nation - but should only happen if it is safe to do so.

That day could come sooner than most anticipated after Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden revealed discussions have taken place over a return in order to "support the whole football community".

He told the House of Commons: "I personally have been in talks with the Premier League with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community.”

United were seventh in the Premier League, and just two points behind Manchester United in fifth, when the season was suspended. The Blades also had a game in hand over their namesakes, who occupy what is likely to be the final Champions League spot after Manchester City were handed a two-year European ban by UEFA.

City are appealing that decision.

One possible method of concluding the season is to adopt a points-per-game metric, which currently would put United sixth and in the Europa League - whenever that would be allowed to be played.
