Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale called up to England squad for Euros, replaces Man Utd's former Blade Dean Henderson

The current United stopper, named the club’s player of the year despite their relegation from the Premier League, was initially named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the Euros but did not make the 26-man cut.

But it was announced this morning that Ramsdale has been called up to the squad and will be on the bench on Friday as England face Scotland at Wembley.

Henderson, who spent two seasons on loan at Bramall Lane from Manchester United, has been forced to withdraw from the squad after suffering a hip problem.

The Football Association said in a statement: “Aaron Ramsdale has replaced Dean Henderson in England’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad.

“Henderson withdraws with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament.

“Under UEFA regulations, squads are permitted to replace goalkeepers on medical grounds at any stage.

“The Manchester United goalkeeper will now return to his club for further assessment and rehabilitation ahead of the 2021/22 season.

“[Ramsdale], a 2017 UEFA U19 Euro winner, will now follow standard COVID-19 testing protocol before entering the camp.”

Ramsdale has been linked with a move away from United after his impressive form last season, coupled with United’s return to the Championship. But the goalkeeper is understood to have no intention of leaving this summer, although United may have to revisit his contract situation to reflect his call-up to the senior England squad.
