Sheffield United unveiled their new strip for next season, on Saturday, causing quite a stir with the notable lack of thick red stripes.

The predominantly white jersey features what is regarded as the first recorded badge with the club website stating; “The one off design created by adidas is a modern interpretation of the first recognised Sheffield United strip from the turn of the 1890s and also includes the first identified club badge. Primarily white, the retro style celebratory shirt features red pinstripes, a collar with press studs and the familiar three stripes of our official technical kit supplier. The shirt will also be worn with red shorts and red socks.”

Adult shirts are priced at £45 with junior shirts from £35. Shorts are available from £20 and socks from £10.

The kit has prompted a mixed response from supporters...some welcoming the cap-tip towards an historical time while others can’t see past the loss of the bold red and white stripes.

Here is a selection of Blades fans’ views:

@WParkRenew - I’ve been watching #sufc for 54 years and I thought we played in Red and White striped shirts just my opinion Not white with a thin red line

@Samantha_J83 - “It speaks to our history & heritage”. What about the 121 years in solid red &white stripes - do those years not count? #sufc #twitterblades

@Blades_Mad - Thoughts on the new home kit? I think it’d be more suited as our away kit. Red stripes almost totally vanished. #Bringbackthestripes #sufc

@themightybl4de - I like the new shirt for next season but would not be my choice for a home kit. #sufc #twitterblades

@JooJi_Marsh - Some reyt uneducated degenerates on here, “hate that badge” & “where’s the stripes” “awful kit” its a tribute 125th kit please shut up #sufc
