Sheffield United fans wary but some optimism ahead of new season despite off-field issues

We asked Sheffield United fans for their thoughts ahead of the new season

Sheffield United fans want nothing more this summer than to be concerning themselves with ins and outs in the transfer market, however boardroom issues are threatening to become the story of the close season at Bramall Lane.

Prince Abdullah's investment vehicle, United World, says it is owed more than £35 million, including interest, from COH Sports, the company that bought the club back in 2014. This has led to a winding up order being issued.

Ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Chesterfield, some fans expressed their concerns to The Star, with one fan simply stating they are “not confident at all” about the upcoming 2026/27 season.

Another fan added: “Last season I was quite optimistic, this season not as much, with all of the stuff that’s going on with the finances… I’m not very confident, if I'm honest.”

A statement issued by United World last week read: "In light of the substantial sums that United World is owed by CSBL (over £35 million inclusive of interest), we have been forced to issue a petition in the High Court to wind up CSBL."

Sheffield United’s parent company, 1919 Partners LLC, reassured fans that the off-pitch discussions will not be ton the detriment of the team.

A spokesperson for 1919 Partners LLC insisted the dispute "has no impact on the day-to-day operations or financial stability of Sheffield United, which remains well positioned ahead of the new season."

However, they also claimed to be cooperating with the governing bodies to resolve the conflict, adding: “We have engaged, and will continue to engage, constructively and transparently with the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator."

Despite all this, there were Blades fans who voiced their optimism for the upcoming campaign.

“I think we’ll be up there with the best teams. It will be difficult against the three teams who have come down from the Premier League, but I’m quietly confident,” said one supporter. “We just need a few more signings and to shore up the defence.”

Another added that he’s “pretty confident,” continuing to explain: “I think Chris Wilder has come in and stabilised the ship. He’s fetched a few decent signings in, but we could do with a couple more through the door before we start [the season].”
