Nigel Adkins says he will give every player the opportunity to impress him and his backroom staff when they report back for pre-season training at the end of this month.

Adkins admits that he hasn’t seen many of the players in the flesh, though has watched Sheffield United games on TV.

Even so, the new manager feels that he won’t be able to make a judgement on any of his squad until he sees what they are capable on the training ground and in games.

United’s players are due back on June 29 and have a pre-season fixture schedule which includes Ilkeston, Cheltenham and Exeter before a frantic finish which will see the Blades take on Newcastle for Chris Morgan’s testimonial, Macclesfield and finish off with Hull at home on August 2.

Adkins also hopes to take the players away for a couple of days during pre-season.

He said: “That awareness is different to actually being on the training ground with them and getting to know them on a one-to-one basis because you have seen many many times, why does one player do well at one football club and not another football club? What does he do well under one manager and not another manager. “What we will do is give everyone an opportunity and get to work with them very quickly in pre-season, make an assessment on where we are, how we can improve because that’s what we need to do, as individuals we have got here and maybe bring somebody in to enhance the group as well.”
