Sheffield United end Spanish training camp on high with victory over La Liga opposition as new season prep steps up
Sheffield United maintained their unbeaten pre-season record by overcoming Levante in Spain, with two defenders finding the net in an encouraging display against top-flight opposition.
Sheffield United continued their unbeaten run in pre-season with a 2-1 victory over La Liga side Levante earlier today, which brings down the curtain on their warm-weather week in Spain. The Blades now return to England ahead of facing Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.
The behind-closed-doors clash was added to the end of United’s week in Valencia to give them some more match practise ahead of the new season, with boss Chris Wilder fielding two different sides either side of half-time in the Spanish heat.
And the Blades, wearing their new away kit for the first time, prevailed thanks to goals from their full-backs, with Femi Seriki and Sam McCallum both on target against the La Liga side. They began quickly with two goals inside the first seven minutes.
The first came when Jamal Baptiste, who kept his place at centre-half amid the Blades’ search for further defensive options, sent Seriki clear down the right before he finished into the bottom corner.
A second followed when Tyrese Campbell recycled a free-kick by Sydie Peck and McCallum, who is again expected to challenge Harrison Burrows for the left-back spot when the new season kicks off, headed home.
The game was played behind closed doors, with currently no indication of who played when for the Blades. Rabbi Matondo, the former Rangers winger now with Brann, has been rumoured to be training with United, with some eagle-eyed fans claiming to have spotted him on some behind-the-scenes footage posted by the club from Spain.
