With Sheffield United striker Brewster starting on the bench Ramsdale, his teammate at Bramall Lane, made a number of smart saves to keep the Swiss at bay. But he was eventually beaten when Dan Ndoye’s effort looped over him, after the striker slipped as he shot, and England’s campaign got off to the worst possible start.

Ramsdale was forced into some early work when a sloppy pass from Ben Godfrey surrendered possession in a dangerous earlier, but the shot from Brighton’s Andi Zeqiri was tame and the United ‘keeper saved well with his body.

England almost went down the other end and scored immediately, when Tom Davies’ curling shot rippled the top of the Swiss net, and Callum Hudson-Odoi went close but rushed his shot after manoeuvring himself into a good position.

Zeqiri went close again with a header, from a short corner after Ramsdale had turned a long-range shot round the post, and there was a let off for England when they again tried to play out from the back in the second half and Bastien Toma hit the base of Ramsdale’s post.

But he was eventually beaten with 13 minutes to go when Ndoye let fly, and the ball appeared to bounce off his standing foot and loop over the United goalkeeper.

Brewster was introduced moments earlier, in place of Nketiah, and Alexandre Jankewitz picked up a yellow card by bringing down the United man as he looked to launch a counter-attack.
