The draw was conducted this afternoon by Andy Cole and Danny Murphy, with United handed a home tie in the first round of the League Cup against the Cumbrians.

The two sides last met in March 2014 at Bramall Lane, when Jose Baxter’s winner secured a 1-0 victory against a Carlisle side that included current England No.1 Jordan Pickford.

Harry Maguire and Conor Coady, later to play in front of Pickford for the England national team, were in the Blades’ line-up that evening.

Carlisle signed former Blades loanee Joe Riley last August on a one-year deal, with an option of a further year, while young United goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst spent time on loan at Carlisle last term.

The draw is split into northern and southern sections, but clubs were not seeded. United are the only club who played in the Premier League last season to feature in the first-round draw, with West Brom and Fulham set to join at the second-round stage.
