DANNY Wilson, the Sheffield United manager, has challenged Chris Porter to seize his opportunity if fellow centre-forward Dave Kitson is declared unfit for tomorrow’s match at Walsall, writes James Shield.

Porter has been placed on stand-by for the crucial League One fixture after his team mate tweaked a hamstring during Monday’s game against Carlisle.

Wilson acknowledged “there has been negativity” surrounding Porter for “quite a while” but insisted: “I don’t think Chris knows what he has got in his locker. This is a challenge for him now.

“He should be pushing Kits every single week anyway. He’s got the talent, the heading ability and the technique to score goals on a regular basis in this division.

“Whether he’s got the desire in down to him.”

Porter, who recently returned from a loan spell with Shrewsbury Town, has hit the target 10 times in 38 starts since joining United nearly two years ago.

With Leeds terminating Dominic Poleon’s youth loan earlier this week, Wilson continued: “There’s a big onus on players like Chris now. He’s one of the most experienced members of the squad.

“With what he’s got in his locker, he should be playing an awful lot more than he does.

“There’s been negativity surrounding Chris for a while. Now it’s up to him to turn that on its head.”

Wilson, whose team are fourth in the table, added: “The players who come in have got to step up to the plate because there won’t be any bedding in process between now and the end.”
