DANNY Wilson last night insisted he ‘isn’t bothered’ about Sheffield United’s games in hand as this season’s League One promotion race enters its decisive phase, writes James Shield.

United, sixth in the table ahead of tomorrow’s fixture at Tranmere Rovers, have played less matches than all of their rivals for a top two finish after being forced to reschedule meetings with Crewe Alexandra, Brentford and Crawley Town.

But Wilson, who admitted that gruelling schedule has impacted upon their training programme, said: “I’m not looking at the games in hand. We’d rather get our noses in front and then use those games if we need them.

“We are in control of our own destiny. We don’t want to be relying on others to help us out because, I’m telling you now, they won’t.”

United entertain Carlisle three days after their visit to Prenton Park before facing Walsall next month.

That appearance at the Bescot Stadium is followed by a hat-trick of outings on home soil with Crawley, Swindon and Brentford arriving at Bramall Lane in quick succession.

Crewe make the journey east shortly after United’s return from Portsmouth before Wilson’s charges host Preston North End on April 27.

United trail second placed Swindon by two points and Wilson said: “We have to manage the players as best we can and we have to get the volume of work right.

“If you asked the lads, though, they’d rather have a midweek game than be training but we’ve still got to make sure the balance is right.

“The biggest thing we are looking at now, by far and away the most important thing, is our game against Tranmere.”
