Sheffield United hope Max Lowe will be cleared to face Manchester City this weekend, after the defender missed his team’s visit to Liverpool with concussion.

Lowe was forced to sit out that game after suffering a blow to the head during the 1-1 draw with Fulham earlier this month, with manager Chris Wilder later revealing the defender had been complaining of double vision.

Although the Football Association’s ‘Return to Play’ protocols recommend those diagnosed with Lowe’s condition rest for at least 14 days, they do make provision for elite level athletes to accelerate their rehabilitation.

Premier League clubs with access to neurological experts and specialist medical care can, in theory, reduce the recovery timescale.

Speaking before Saturday’s trip to Merseyside, Wilder appeared to suggest Lowe had a chance of featuring against Jurgen Klopp’s side although The Star understands this was never the case.

“We’re taking a look at Max,” he said. “He’s coming along well and we’ll see how he is, how he gets on, before taking it from there.”

"Obviously his health comes first,” Wilder continued. “I think that goes without saying but he’s always been in the best possible hands. We’re seeing how he does every single day and it’s goo to see him coming along well. So we’ll see how he is, how things go.”

Lowe, aged 23, joined United from Derby County during the close season with Jayden Bogle, his team mate at Pride Park, also making the journey from the east Midlands to South Yorkshire.
