Sheffield United could face competition if they decide to reignite their interest in Argentine defender

Members of Bramall Lane’s hierarchy considered making an approach for Rojo earlier this season, when Jack O’Connell was incapacitated following knee surgery, but a bid failed to materialise.

With Chris Wilder revealing he wants to draft-in cover for O’Connell when the market reopens over the festive period, Rojo’s admirers on the United board could encourage the manager to look at the situation again early next month. But, if Wilder does decide the 30-year-old is a viable option, Fenerbahce’s interest could complicate the situation given their greater spending power.

Rojo has not played a first team game for Manchester United in over a year, making his last appearance for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against Brighton and Hove Albion in 2019.

Despite falling out of favour under the Norwegian, Rojo’s best performances in England came when Solskjaer’s predecessor Louis van Gaal employed a 3-5-2 formation - the same system Wilder has utilised since taking charge of United in May 2016.

Rojo finished the end of last season on loan with Estudiantes de la Plata, and is expected to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer. Ben Davies of Preston North End is also known to have featured on United’s radar in recent months.

Wing-back Enda Stevens is likely to be deployed at centre-half when United travel to West Bromwich Albion this weekend, if the Republic of Ireland international recovers from an injury of his own.
