Sheffield United confident about potential double signing timescale

Sheffield United expect the parent clubs of Panos Retsos and Richairo Zivkovic to allow them to delay a decision on whether or not they are offered permanent contracts at Bramall Lane until later this year, after FIFA confirmed it will agree to extend loans scheduled to expire before the Premier League season is likely to conclude.

Retsos, the Greece defender, and Zivkovic, who has been capped by Holland at under-21 level, are scheduled to return to Bayer Leverkusen and Changchun Yatai respectively at the end of next month.

Although United inserted ‘first refusal’ clauses into the deals which brought them to South Yorkshire in January, it is understood they will become null and void unless triggered before May 30.

But officials acting on Chris Wilder’s behalf are confident their counterparts at the BayArena and Changchun Stadium will let them wait until the English top-flight campaign is concluded before indicating if they plan to take up those options.

United were seventh in the table when the fixture calendar was suspended at the beginning of March due to coronavirus.

Unbeaten in their last six outings before the shutdown was announced, Wilder has admitted his squad’s form has made it difficult for the duo to force themselves into the starting eleven with Zivkovic still waiting to make his debut for the English club.

But the United manager has reassured both the striker and Retsos, who featured during the FA Cup win over Reading, that their futures will be decided on a number of factors; including performances during training.
