Sheffield United: Chris Wilder responds to criticism of striker David McGoldrick following missed chances against Southampton

McGoldrick was foiled twice by Saints goalkeeper Angus Gunn, including a good one-on-one opening after being put clear by strike partner Oli McBurnie.

The striker’s all-round performance was superb, but his finishing was called into question by some supporters following other good chances so far this Premier League season.

But Wilder, speaking this morning at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Everton game on Saturday, said: “David had that last year; his start to the season was similar but he was superb, throughout the season.

“His finishes at Hull stick out… a header right in the top corner. He’ll be alright. I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t getting in that position, or shying away.

“Or if the team weren’t creating. But we are, and he does. I’ve got a whole load of forwards who can score. I’ve been pleased with the introduction of Lys Mousset, Callum missed out on Saturday because he had a few issues from international duty. But he’s raring to go and training well.

“McBurnie scored in a way on Saturday [the goal was later ruled out by VAR] and he’ll be disappointed. But he’s getting into good positions, and Didzy just keeps going and going.

“The general play from the two at the top of the pitch was really good against Southampton and if we can create that amount of chances, for 75 per cent of the games this season, then we’ll be alright.”
