Wilder has attracted even more plaudits after leading the Blades to sixth in the Premier League, following promotions from League One and the Championship.

Last night, they outplayed Manchester United for large periods of the game at Bramall Lane in a 3-3 draw. His Blades have also taken points off Chelsea and Spurs away from home, beaten Arsenal at Bramall Lane and only lost narrowly to champions-elect Liverpool.

That has not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with the Hammers hierarchy casting admiring glances in his direction if and when the axe falls on Pellegrini. The £10m-a-year Hammers chief spent £100m in the summer, but his side are only three points above the drop zone.

The Mirror reports that the Hammers board would favour a British coach next, although Rafa Benitez would also be considered. Wilder, Chris Hughton and David Moyes would also feature on any shortlist.
