United were this morning poised to part company with their manager, and an announcement was expected today.

A planned 10am press call, with a member of Wilder’s first-team squad, was cancelled this morning, and the manager himself was scheduled to meet the media via Zoom at 1.30pm ahead of Sunday’s clash with Leicester City.

But after news broke that Wilder was on the brink of leaving his boyhood club, that press call was pushed back to 5pm.

Then, about 15 minutes before it was scheduled to start, journalists were informed via email that it has been cancelled “due to circumstances beyond our control”.

The delay has caused fresh uncertainty about Wilder’s position, with tens of thousands of Blades fans anxiously waiting for 5pm’s press call and hoping to learn more.

Wilder is one of the best managers in United’s entire history, but his relationship with the club’s board has been fraught for some time.
