Reece Brown is poised to make his Carlisle debut at Bramall Lane tonight after joining Graham Kavanagh’s side on loan from Watford.

The centre-half, whose brother Wes plays for Sunderland, could feature during the League One fixture against Sheffield United as the visitors look to strengthen a defence which has conceded nine goals in its previous seven outings.

Graham Kavanagh, the Carlisle manager, said: “He has size and he is very, very quick. He has an excellent pedigree and he’s been with clubs who play the game the right way.

“I’m hoping he adds a lot of quality to the group.”

Brown, aged 22, started his career at Manchester United before joining Watford last summer and Kavanagh added: “He has quite a bit of experience in this league.

“He went to Oldham and Coventry on loan from Manchester United and he did well with both clubs.”

Brown, who also enjoyed a brief spell with United’s South Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers, has made only three appearances for the Hertfordshire club this term.

With Sean O’Hanlon still nursing an injury, Kavanagh had been keen to bolster his options after negotiations aimed at renewing the loans of Jordan Pickford and Danny Redmond reached a positive conclusion earlier this week.

Pickford, a 19-year-old goalkeeper from Sunderland, will remain at Brunton Park until the end of the season. Redmond is scheduled to rejoin Wigan Athletic next month when Brown’s agreement also expires.

“We’ve got a big game at Sheffield in front of a big crowd against a team in form,” Redmond said. “But we will do all we can to get the win.

“First-team football is what I want to be doing. I’ve settled in really quickly here and Kav has been great with me so far.

“He’s taught me a lot and I’m learning and improving all the time.”
