Berge was hurt in the controversial incident which saw United denied a penalty late on against Rangers, after appearing to have his shirt pulled by Andre Dozzell.

While no timescale has been placed on Berge's return, the Norwegian has undergone an X-ray and MRI scan in order to ascertain the damage ahead of United's trip to Staffordshire.

"We're being really precautionary, telling him to keep the weight off," manager Paul Heckingbottom said.

"If everything comes back all clear, it's not restricting him and the pain's okay, then we can get him involved.

"We'll see what the scan says and go from there."

Heckingbottom is expecting to be without the services of wing-back George Baldock at Stoke, after he went off with a side issue in the defeat to QPR.

"He's got a strain on his side, which is probably going to take some time to clear up," Heckingbottom said.

"So he's more than likely going to be out. He's in a lot of discomfort, there's no way I can see him playing at the minute.

"We'll have to see how he responds. Anything in your middle, you feel it all the time when you move. He's going to feel it all the time and as soon as that pain goes it's generally pretty quick. But from our initial look at him, I can't see it."
