Sheffield United have made a significant breakthrough in their campaign to bring John Brayford back to Bramall Lane, The Star can reveal.

Sources close to Cardiff City confirmed today that the defender, who made 20 appearances after joining Nigel Clough’s side on loan last term, could be granted permission to hold talks with the League One club.

Brayford has been the subject of at least five bids from United since returning to south Wales in May.

City manager Russell Slade is understood to have informed the former Derby County and Burton Albion full-back that, although he would prefer to retain his services, the matter must be addressed before the end of the transfer window.
