CHRIS Porter, the Sheffield United striker, is attracting interest from several Football League clubs, The Star understands.

Porter, who has missed his team’s last five games through injury, has scored 10 goals in 61 appearances since arriving at Bramall Lane from Derby County 18 months ago.

But it remains unclear whether Danny Wilson, the United manager, would be prepared to do business should a suitable offer materialise.

Wilson, whose side return to League One action against Yeovil Town on Saturday, recently admitted he is continuing to explore ways of boosting United’s firepower despite capturing former Scotland under-21 international Jamie Murphy from Motherwell.

Speaking before last weekend’s FA Cup success over Oxford, Wilson acknowledged the implications of Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP), which limits the amount of money he can spend on players, means those on the periphery of his squad could be sacrificed to fund new arrivals.

As expected, United yesterday allowed David McAllister to join divisional rivals Shrewsbury Town for an undisclosed sum after he failed to command a regular place in their starting 11.

Town, who are scheduled to host United at Greenhous Meadow on February 9, are believed to have paid a nominal sum to acquire the 24-year-old’s services on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

McAllister’s departure eases the pressure on United to comply with the demands of SCMP following their moves for Murphy and defender Danny Higginbotham.

“I think initially it was a surprise that Sheffield United would sell him as he’s figured in a lot of their games,” Graham Turner, the Town manager, said. “But the fact he has been here - he knows all about us, knows the professional attitude, the work ethic - I think helped in his decision.”

McAllister impressed during a spell on loan with Town towards the end of last term.

Meanwhile, Matt Hill has been ruled out for around six weeks with a fractured jaw.
