David Weir will hope that time spent in Sheffield rather than Scotland has been a benefit to two injured members of his first team squad.

Neither Ryan Flynn nor Tony McMahon were taken on Sheffield united’s trip North of the Border as they strive to overcome injuries.

McMahon had an achilles injury at the end of last season but is on the mend and he intends being available for the start of the season.

Winger Flynn was injured before the squad left for Scotland last week and he has been working on his fitness this week and it is hoped that he will be figuring in the forthcoming friendlies although there is no confirmation yet that this could include the next outing at Kevin Blackwell’s Bury tomorrow (3pm).

Meanwhile, United did not retain their interest in either of the Scottish players who have been on trial with them, central defender Steve Saunders and former Hearts left back Derek Grainger.

Saunders, capped once and formerly at Motherwell, has joined Ross County.
