David Weir is poised to make the first signings of his reign this week.

The Blades’ new boss completes his second week in charge at Bramall Lane today and could well mark it by tying up a new arrival.

It is likely this will be followed by at least one more as he acts ahead of the club’s trip to Scotland where they start their pre-season build-up.

Weir has said he will take a close look at his squad and give everyone a chance but the opportunity to add to an area of the team he feels needs it, or bring someone in with certain qualities, is too good not to proceed with.

It was his plan to have any newcomers in ahead of the trip north of the border which will see United play three matches, the first of them a week tomorrow at Morton.

Weir is known to want a striker with pace.

Indeed, it would be no surprise if two attackers were brought in at the club this week. Last season’s main forward, Dave Kitson has been released.
