Bob Harris believes Nigel Clough is building ‘something special’ at Bramall Lane.

The Sheffield United defender delivered his verdict after their victory over League One leaders Bristol City last weekend which left the visitors fifth in the table.

Clough, the United manager, has embarked on a major overhaul of the club’s playing staff since taking charge of a team spiralling towards relegation 16 months ago and reached the semi-finals of both major domestic knockout tournaments.

Harris said: “The gaffer is trying to build something here and the lads are buying into it. Listen, this is a huge football club and if you wanted to find any bigger or better then you’re going to have to look damn hard.

“But we’ve just come through a transfer window where two players, Jamie (Murphy) and Terry (Kennedy) have signed new contracts and nobody, no one was looking to go elsewhere. When you’ve got that type of attitude and togetherness behind the scenes, it’s special, trust me, it really is.”

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s not always like this at a football club,” Harris, previously of Blackpool, Queen of the South and Rotherham, added. “When everyone is pulling in the right direction and everyone buys into what the gaffer is trying to do.”

“Listen, that doesn’t always happen either. It’s not always like that even though people tell you it is.”

United return to action against Notts County tomorrow with Clough continuing to monitor several potential targets, including Steve Davies, Harris’ former team mate at Bloomfield Road, in the loan market.

“When our backs are to the wall we really step up,” Harris said. “The character here really stands out.

“Everyone the gaffer brings in only adds to what is already a tight knit group.

“We’re always disappointed whenever we lose but we always seem to get a response. And that’s testament to what’s happening behind the scenes.

“If it’s not right then you can’t go on a run like we did last year. You can’t beat some of the teams we have in the cups.”
