Sheffield United await verdict after another injury blow ahead of Premier League clash with Tottenham

Sheffield United face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the arm injury John Lundstram sustained during their FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal, amid fears it could force him to miss Thursday’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane.

The midfielder appeared to be using his shirt as a makeshift sling when, after seeing an effort disallowed by VAR, he was substituted before the midway point of yesterday’s 2-1 defeat.

Speaking afterwards, United manager Chris Wilder admitted it was still too early to say if Lundstram will be available for selection when Spurs make the journey to South Yorkshire.

“We don’t know yet (how serious it is),” Wilder said. “It’s one for the physios to have a look at and then we’ll go from there.”

With Jack O’Connell yet to make an appearance since English football returned to action earlier this month following the Covid-19 pandemic, Wilder is anxious not to see another key player enter the treatment room. However he did praise the performance of Lundstram’s replacement Sander Berge, describing it as one of the Norwegian’s best since a January move from Genk.

George Baldock was also withdrawn against Arsenal but Wilder, who has acknowledged he must rotate his squad to cope with the demands of a gruelling fixture schedule, confirmed the defender was not carrying a knock.

“No, there’s nothing wrong with George,” Wilder said. “It’s just a change we wanted to make.”
