Sheffield United are thought to be holding contract talks with Iliman Ndiaye, their promising French midfielder, following his first team breakthrough last month.

Discussions between Bramall Lane’s board of directors and Ndiaye’s representative began earlier this month, with the youngster expected to be tabled with an official offer shortly.

Although Ndiaye’s current deal does not expire until next summer, his terms and conditions are unlikely to reflect his new status as the club after making his Premier League debut during Paul Heckingbottom’s first match in caretaker charge.

With Ndiaye’s progress likely to have alerted other top-flight and Championship clubs to his potential, the 21-year-old’s agent will be hoping to ensure their client’s status is both rewarded and reflected by United’s proposal.

Viewed as a potential replacement for the out-of-form John Lundstram, Ndiaye was a surprise omission from the squad which travelled to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, while eyebrows were also raised when he failed to appear off the bench during United’s meeting with Arsenal six days earlier.

However, with their defeat at Molineux confirming United’s relegation from the Premier League, Paul Heckingbottom has outlined plans to provide Ndiaye and other Steelphalt Academy graduates with more senior experience during the remaining six matches of the campaign.

Zak Brunt, Kyron Gordon and Antwoine Hackford have also featured on United’s matchday roster in recent weeks, with former manager Chris Wilder handing the latter his first taste of top-flight football at Crystal Palace in January.

Placed in caretaker charge following Wilder’s departure nearly five weeks ago, Heckingbottom coached United’s under-23 team before stepping into the breach ahead of their trip to Leicester City.

“First of all, they have to show they’re good enough,” Heckingbottom said. “But we do want to bring people through and provide opportunities and create a proper pathway – because there is talent in there.”

Born in Rouen. Ndiaye spent time in the youth systems of both his howtown club and Marseille before joining United after impressing for non-league outfit Boreham Wood.

He played six times for Hyde United during a spell on loan at Ewen Fields last season, scoring once, before returning to South Yorkshire.
