Sheffield United are motivated by glory, not money

Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager, insisted his players are motivated by “glory” rather than money after watching them reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Wilder made the claim following their fifth round win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium, with goals from David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp propelling United into the last eight of the competition.

Wilder, whose side are eighth in the Premier League table a season after being promoted from the Championship, acknowledged United are now pushing for European football on two fronts; with only five points separating them from fourth-placed Chelsea.

“When you’ve had a bit of success, you want a bit more,” Wilder, who took charge of a squad languishing in the third tier only four years ago, said. “You’re hungry for more.

“It’s not about new contracts and getting more money. It’s about glory and trying to achieve more.

“That’s my sole focus for our football club and the players inspire the club.”

McGoldrick, scoring his first United goal since April, opened the scoring after only two minutes before George Puscas levelled when Reading were awarded a penalty. But substitute Billy Sharp restored United’s advantage in extra time.

“David is delighted,” Wilder said. “Nobody expected it to be early March (when he opened his account). Everybody was delighted, you saw the reaction when he scored.

“He’s a very intelligent player and a very popular player. I believe we’ve got some really talented boys at the top of the pitch.”

“Billy has been brilliant on and off the pitch,” Wilder added. “He’s kept himself in great shape and that’s the mark of the man as the skipper. He’s always been great for me.

“He’s not bothered about personal accolades. He’s bothered about this football club. There’s still life left in him. He’ll tell you that as well. He’s just a natural finisher.”
