The message, delivered by manager Chris Wilder, reflects not only his desire to build upon the recent progress they have achieved but also the state of play in the table, where only seven points separate them from David Moyes’ 16th placed team.
“We’re honestly just looking at the next game,” Wilder said, brushing aside plaudits about United’s results since being promoted last season. “The time to assess how we’ve done, the only assessment that really matters, is the one that comes at the end.”

After making eleven changes for last weekend’s FA Cup tie against AFC Fylde, Wilder will usher the likes of Jack O’Connell, John Egan and Oliver Norwood back into action when West Ham travel north on Friday.
Moyes has won both of his fixtures since returning to the London Stadium, where he spent most of the 2017/18 campaign, last month.
Although newly promoted squads traditionally struggle after Christmas, Wilder said: “I’m confident we can keep on picking up results. We’re just head down and going into the next one.
“That’s all the focus is.”
“The lads have got an enormous amount of desire,” he added. “There’s a lot still to come from them as well.”
