According to a report from the Guardian, West Ham United, Aston Villa, and the Blades are all interested in the versatile midfielder, who is capable of playing either in a central role or out on wing.

The 31-year-old has netted four goals and made 11 assists in his 27 games for his current club so far, and boasts an illustrious career starring for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Benfica, and Boca Juniors.

The report suggests that the Hammers are the current front runners to sign the ex-Argentina international, but United are credited with "registering an interest" in the player.

Certainly, a player of Gaitain's quality could add a spark to the Blades' midfield, with his flawless passing and clinical set-pieces among his best attributes. It is, however, unclear how much Chris Wilder will look to alter his team in the January transfer window, given how impressive their start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign has been.

Meanwhile, Wilder's side are hard at work preparing for this weekend's clash against Manchester United at Bramall Lane. While the Blades are currently riding high in fifth place, the will be mindful of the fact that just six points separate them from Aston Villa in 17th, and won't be resting on their laurels any time soon.
