Have your say

Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, has warned his team are ready to fight fire with fire during tomorrow’s potentially explosive encounter with Chesterfield, writes James Shield.

But Adkins, who is preparing to take charge of his first competitive fixture at Bramall Lane since being appointed two months ago, vowed United will not sacrifice their attacking principles after making a disappointing start to the new League One campaign.

“We have got a lot of attack-minded players, and early in the campaign, people have still got to gel.

“But the strikers we have got here, we know can score goals. That’s a big thing, we are not just reliant on one player, we have got several.

“It’s important we go and dominate the game but the opposition have a big say in that. We have to be mindful and respectful of what they can do.

“Chesterfield can play but they also have the opportunity to change things round and be very, very big as well from a physical point of view.

“We are under no illusions it will be a tough encounter. But one which should be a rip roaring atmosphere and very exciting for the supporters.”

United, despite starting the season as title favourites, were beaten 4-0 at Gillingham last weekend. Adkins, who saw them overcome Morecambe in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening, must choose between Billy Sharp, Che Adams, Conor Sammon, Marc McNulty and Michael Higdon in attack.

“We want to be exciting, win games of football and we need the supporters to get right behind the lads,” he said. “I can see they are going to.

“We all have a common goal, to be successful. To do that, if you support the lads, get behind them, come the final whistle it’s football.

“You will either applaud, or vent your anger. But that support is important.”
