As we come up to the halfway point of the season there was still plenty of belief among Sheffield United fans that they could turn this season around and spark a survival bid.

However, after this defeat to Southampton things look a little different.

Whereas, in many of the previous games this campaign the Blades were well in the match and unfortunate not to have picked up something, this one at St Mary’s was as one-sided as they come.

Sheffield United never looked like getting anything from it and goals from Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond made it a walk in the park for the Saints who were largely untroubled as United failed to register a single shot on target.

And so, with 12 games gone and just one point picked up, some Blades fans are resigning themselves to life in the Championship next season.

@tyronej1984 posted: “Heart says we’ll pull off the biggest miracle, head says plan for the Championship next season and make us favourites to come back up.”

@JEHobson said: “Honestly can’t see any other manager to get us out of this position than Wilder. And even if not, start again and go again next season. The players did not look bothered today, another tough watch”

@simonhealy1968 questioned: “How will we create chances if our passing is so slow and sloppy. Intensity is no where near the levels required in the Premier league. Where do we go from here?”

@rhodri_wyse was hard-hitting: “Speechless watching today’s performance. Rolled over and asked to be beaten. Pathetic, spineless, gutless, embarrassing, going down.”

@ryanhobson7 said: “Have to say after last seasons minor miracle we had to strengthen the first team. We haven’t. Not one player brought in was better than what we already had. A really poor transfer window. We recruited for the Championship. That’s where we will end up”

@Jhill_90 gave some credit to the opposition: “It’s so hard watching us right now. The lack of creativity is so apparent. We’re conceding sloppy goals. Confidence has completely gone. We need fans back ASAP. Fair play to Southampton though, they’re a very good pressing team”

And @AntSSimo19 said: “Shambles. Have to worry about the long term repercussions now. Still 26 PL games to go but we are so far off it. The damage such an early relegation could do morale and confidence wise. Can’t even see where a goal comes from at the minute let alone anything else.”
