News circulated this week that the Gunners had already made a move for Sander Berge or at least enquired how much the Blades midfielder would cost if they were to take him to North London.

Berge cost United £22m when he moved to Bramall Lane from Genk in January 2020 and after taking some time to find his feet, began to look every inch a Premier League midfielder.

His presence was missed in the middle of the park after he picked up a serious injury in the Blades’ 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in December and he only just recently returned.

It was revealed last week, however, that a fresh setback could see the 23-year-old miss the remainder of the season.

That only poured fuel on the fire of that transfer speculation, with Mikel Arteta and Arsenal waiting in the wings.

From a United perspective there is nothing concrete and while the Gunners are understood to have Berge on their wanted list, they are yet to make their move.

"No, no offers," said Sheffield United interim manager Paul Heckingbottom.

"We know how things work. If there is anything happening for our players it's bubbling away behind the scenes until windows open and things can possibly happen, but it is all paper talk.

"Most of the questions you get asked about possible targets never ever comes to fruition. Ninety-odd percent of it will never surface.

"At the minute it is all just rumour and speculation. We've had no bids for our players."
