The Norweigan, signed for £22m from Genk in the last transfer window, was taken off in extra time of United's FA Cup win at Reading on Tuesday evening after suffering from cramp.

That game was also Berge's first in red and white, in his 'natural' position at the base of United's midfield; his other three appearances so far have come in the box-to-box role played by John Lundstram before his arrival.

"It was unpleasant," Berge told the Norweigan newspaper VG.

"I stood for as long as I could, but there were cramps in both thighs and legs, so it was probably a good decision that I got to sit on the bench and watch.

"'ve had cramps before, but now it was like I couldn't move. We worked on it a bit, then I got to play a few minutes in extra time, but then they saw that I hung in the ropes when I had to run up and down.

"You don't want it to be decisive or something to happen, so you have to be mentally strong.

"There has been a lot of that in the beginning. It's about the body adjusting."

On playing in the deeper role, Berge added: "I felt at home. It was good to have the ball more and do what I can. It was tough conditions, but I felt it was going well."
