Less than a week later, when England face the auld enemy Scotland on Friday night, Ramsdale will have a front-row seat on the bench after being drafted into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the rest of the tournament.

It has certainly been a whirlwind few days for the Sheffield United goalkeeper, who will become the first Blades player to represent England at a major tournament since fellow stopper Alan Hodgkinson at the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

“I don’t know how to put it into words,” admitted Ramsdale, who was called up to Gareth Southgate’s pre-Euros squad before initially not making the 26-man cut.

“I didn’t think things would get better than the camp in Middlesbrough, when I was on the bench for the friendlies, with my kit on and the national anthem playing, and I got goosebumps all over my body.

“I imagined how that would feel at Wembley. I tried desperately to get a ticket for the first game, but I couldn’t get one. So we had a barbecue instead and I was jumping up and down like a crazy person when Raheem [Sterling] scored.

“Then I bumped into him today and tried to play it cool, just say hello! I wanted to speak about the game with everyone but they’ve probably had enough of it, so I just tried to play it cool.

“It’s crazy how things work out.”

Ramsdale originally received the call from England to help out in training ahead of the Scotland game, with former Blades loanee Dean Henderson struggling with a hip injury.

But after a scan showed the Manchester United ‘keeper had torn a glute, Ramsdale was told he would be called up to the squad for the rest of the tournament.

“There was a massive smile on my face,” Ramsdale, speaking on the Official England Podcast, admitted.

“My driver overheard and we had a bit of a cheer, before I put it in my family group chat. It was a strange day, but I’m glad to be here and I’m ready to kick on.”
