Exclusive:Rabbi Matondo facing defining period at Sheffield United as former Rangers man looks to kickstart career
Rabbi Matondo, the former Rangers winger, has impressed during Sheffield United's training camp in Spain and is expected to remain with Chris Wilder's squad this week as the Blades edge closer to a decision on his future.
A decision is expected to be taken on Rabbi Matondo’s Sheffield United future this week after the former Rangers man caught the eye on the Blades’ pre-season trip to Valencia last week. The winger is free to leave Norwegian side SK Brann despite only joining at the end of March.
The Welsh international was given permission to link up with United in Spain and featured in one of two XIs in either half as the Blades beat Levante on Friday to continue their unbeaten pre-season campaign.
The Star has been told that Matondo looked bright in Spain and is expected to remain with United this coming week, potentially having another chance to impress in this afternoon’s behind-closed-doors friendly with Huddersfield Town - who yesterday announced the appointment of former United No.2 Alan Knill as their new assistant boss.
The understanding is that no decision has yet been made on Matondo’s future and that this week is key in his hopes of landing a return to British football. He spent four years at Ibrox but admitted his time north of the border was “ruined” by injuries.
He also has previous experience of the Championship via a loan spell at Stoke City in the second half of the 2020/21 season, playing 11 times and scoring once.
"I had a tough time at Rangers, and I never reached my potential there,” Matondo has previously admitted. “Every single season was basically ruined by various injuries. Now I just want to stay injury-free and able to play football. If I can do that, I know I will find the rhythm and confidence.”
With boss Chris Wilder placing a big premium on fitness and availability in his squad for the coming season, United will have to be satisfied that Matondo’s injury frustration is behind him.
But if he does sign it would put another piece of Wilder’s jigsaw in place ahead of the new season. United signed free agent Matt Doherty yesterday to complete their right-back options but a left winger has been on the wishlist since the start of the summer and further reinforcements at centre-half are needed.
The Blades will also monitor the free agent market for goalkeeping options after allowing No.3 Luke Faxon to join Boston United on loan earlier this summer.
