And in a remarkable tribute, Guardiola admitted that studying how Chris Wilder’s squad have progressed since gaining promotion last term has revealed how the reigning champions of England can improve themselves.

“I saw some moments they’re doing and it’s in the reason why they’re in the position they’re in,” the Catalan said. “I’m impressed and I admire how they play with the same manager and players coming into the Premier League, and I like it.”

Wilder’s men have prepared for tomorrow’s match in seventh - five places and 14 points behind their latest opponents - but Guardiola said: “As a manager, you see things you can improve. They’re the ones (to watch).”
