Heckingbottom was named United’s interim manager after the departure of Chris Wilder in March and although he couldn’t halt the inevitable slide into the Championship, the former Leeds and Barnsley boss did bring some respectability back to Bramall Lane after winning three of his final six matches in charge.

United have not yet officially confirmed whether Heckingbottom will return to his previous job as the head of the Blades’ U23s, who won their league title last season.

“Wishing Slav all the best in the job, I hope the club are promoted back to where they belong in 12 months’ time.”
