With fans back in United’s home stadium for the first time since last March, David McGoldrick scored the winner to at least give United something to cling onto over the summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship following two seasons at the top table of English football.

“It was a good win, a good performance,” interim boss Heckingbottom admitted.

“I’m delighted for the fans and I’m delighted for the players as well, to get a win in front of the fans.

“I told them before the game that I thought we deserved a win for how they’ve approached my time here, but they had to earn it. And we did that.

“We were a threat on the counter, which we haven’t been for a lot of the games, and defended our box very well, so I’m pleased with them and for them.”

McGoldrick’s goal was a typical touch of class, picking up the ball deep before finding the bottom corner with a wonderful finish from around 25 yards out.

“We’ve tried to do a lot of work on creating chances and scoring goals while not losing strength at the other end,” Heckingbottom added.

“It’s a tough game to score goals in, the goal today was straight from the training ground in terms of positions but then it was the moment of quality and class you need to win games.”
