Fleck won a long-overdue first senior cap for his country last October, after helping United into the Premier League and acquitting himself well in the early stages of the season.

McBurnie, as a teammate with club and country, knows how good Fleck is and believes that, under new boss Steve Clarke, Scotland have the tools to qualify for the European Championships next year via the play-offs.

“Look at the players we have and how many are in the top leagues. The manager who has come in is different class. He knows how to set up a team," McBurnie told The Athletic.

"We have the players. You can’t doubt the quality of the squad. There is Robbo (Andrew Robertson), who has won the Champions League and is about to win the Premier League.

“Flecky can’t even get a game and we all know how good he is. His debut only came last year, which is crazy. He is one of the best players I’ve played with. But that shows how many good players we have in his position.

“We have not qualified for such a long time so these play-off games will be massive. To be able to qualify for a World Cup or Euros with Scotland is something I have always dreamed about."
