Robinson made 16 appearances and scored three goals after joining Slaven Bilic’s side in January, helping them win promotion from the Championship before returning to Bramall Lane.

Uncertainty surrounding Lys Mousset’s future could persuade the manager to hang fire, however, until the Frenchman reports back for training - when coaching staff will assess his physical conditioning.

After seeing the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic force Bramall Lane’s hierarchy to reduce his recruitment budget, it is expected that Wilder will be forced to create room on the club’s budget before completing his overhaul of a squad which finished ninth in the table last season.

AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is the only target United are seriously considering at this stage if, as seems likely given Manchester United’s demands, Dean Henderson does not return following two successful years in South Yorkshire. Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson, Reading midfielder John Swift and Matty Cash, the Nottingham Forest full-back, also feature on Wilder’s wanted list.
