New duo backed to turn round season

SHEFFIELD United manager Micky Adams last night insisted loan signings Joe Mattock and Shane Lowry possess the qualities required to revitalise the South Yorkshire club's season.

Adams was speaking after capturing the youngsters on season-long deals from West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.

Refusing to rule out the possibility of either prolonging their stay beyond the end of the campaign - "Any loan that you take into a club is with a view to extending"- Adams revealed that Mattock's grandad had been pressing the England under-21 international's case.

"When Micky contacted me he told me that he'd been speaking to him," Mattock said. "I joked that he shouldn't believe everything he says, but fortunately it's was all good.

"I think he's an old friend of the gaffer. He's an Ipswich fan but he'll probably be coming to watch me."

Mattock, who started his career at Leicester, is poised to feature at Coventry City tomorrow.

Predicting that Mattock, like Lowry, will inject "vibrancy" into United's squad, Adams added: "I'm pleased to get the lad. He's a good player, has got good credentials and, just as importantly, is very keen.

"Joe knows the division because he played 30 or so games for West Brom when they got promoted but then got a little bit unlucky with an injury and the fact they brought another left-back in during that time."

Like his fellow defender, Lowry also has experience of Championship competition following a recent spell with Plymouth Argyle. Both West Brom and Villa have agreed not to insert recall clauses into their respective agreements.
