Strikes from Billy Sharp and John Lundstram cancelled out Callum Wilson’s 13th minute effort for the Cherries to move Chris Wilder’s side into fifth place and just two points behind Chelsea in the final Champions League spot.

Not surprisingly, the manager refused to get carried away when he spoke to the media after the victory.

“All we are looking at now is the next game, and then the game after that,” he said.

But fans have taken to Twitter tonight to toast United’s remarkable achievements so far.

@RobWilson1989 Forty points for safety they said ...... 99 per cent completed it mate #Sufc #twitterblades

@EdinburghBlade Remember when Wilder said 'Id be dangerous with money'? Well £66,000,000 later we are fifth in Prem and two points off Champions League. #SUFC #Twitterblades

@Eggman1889 Four years ago we would have been pleased with being two points behind fourth in League 1! How things have changed for the better. #twitterblades

@MilnesD Not our best performance today but up against a good team that didn’t need to resort to time wasting and feigning fouls. Only two points behind Chelsea who need to visit Bramall Lane. Anybody seen Merson, Lawro, Nicholas or Garth Crooks?

@oldsufctweets We move into Europa spot, with Chelsea yet to come to the Lane. Dodgy start, but when we went through the gears they couldn't handle us. Berge picking some reyt passes out. Mousset causing chaos , Billy and Oli leading the line. Then there is Deano and the Lord #twitterblades

@TravelingBlade Not our prettiest performance today and a draw wouldn’t have been awful given how fragile they made us look initially but the true test of a side is how they pick themselves up and get something from a ‘lesser’ performance. Never know when we’re beaten #sufc #twitterblades

@Henni_Papenfuss It's about time we started talking about Fleck in similar circles to Currie, Woodward and Edwards. Without a doubt for me, top five players we've EVER had! #TwitterBlades
