As part of our #myfirstgame series, The Star will feature one supporter’s memories of their first experience seeing Sheffield United on these pages every day this week.

Today it’s the turn of Sam Hill to remember his first Blades game, on April 20 1991 against Spurs.

As I had been a good lad at my swimming lesson, my Dad announced that we would be travelling to Bramall Lane to see Sheffield United play Tottenham. I was only seven years old, so to go see a live football match was a real thrill.

I remember being devastated that Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne weren’t playing, as they were my heroes at that point. I remember walking through the tunnel of the South Stand and being amazed at just how big this place was, as I had only ever watched/played football from the side of a field before.

I remember having to cover my ears as the teams came out, such was the cacophony of noise. As for the match itself my memory is rather hazy, I do remember Paul Walsh scoring and we were trailing 2-1 going into the final moments of the game, and United desperately chasing an equaliser.

Then the pressure finally told as Brian Deane put in a late equaliser – causing my Dad to pick me up and throw me up in the air in his excitement. He probably only threw me a foot in the air but it felt like I travelled 20 feet as he hugged and kissed all of those around us!

I think it is safe to say that since then, I have been hooked to Sheffield United football club, and to football in general.
