The record-breaking Argentinian striker had only been on the pitch six minutes when he slotted home Kevin De Bruyne’s pinpoint cross on another night when Chris Wilder’s United side went ‘toe-to-toe’ with Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering champions.

And it was a match to remember for loan keeper Dean Henderson, who pulled off three outstanding saves in the first-half - including a 37th-minute penalty save to deny Gabriel Jesus from the penalty spot.

Here’s what United fans have had to say on Twitter about their side’s performance tonight.

@w1970r Love the passion and desire, players can hold their heads high some great performances - City too good for most teams in possession.

@Official_ShezaB Thought we played brilliant they were lucky to get that goal ... roll on the next game.

@harleyatkins9 We have two months of favourable fixtures now, thank the Lord we’ve got some of the best teams in the world done with.

@NathanPXXI Let’s be honest we lost 1-0 to Liverpool and 1-0 Man City at least we weren’t absolutely smashed like 6-1 or worst. I can’t complain. BLADES ARE STAYING UP.

@richardbramhall Yet again another fantastic performance by the Blades against one of the top teams in Europe. Every player worked so hard all night but one things for sure, they owe @deanhenderson a drink #utb #proudsufcfan

@lee_littlewood Henderson quite rightly man of the match but I thought that was McBurnie's best game in a Blades shirt. Physical, bullied defenders and was a nuisance all match. Dropped off and showed quality and nice link up play. Just needed to stretch that leg another inch! #twitterblades
