An experienced Sheffield United U21 side beat Matlock Town 4-1 last night - but a serious injury to Matt Done overshadowed the big victory.
Done, who scored 22 goals last season for United and previous club Rochdale, left the field after a collision and was later taken to hospital with his arm in a sling.
United manager Nigel Adkins later revealed that Done would miss the season opener, against Gillingham on August 8.
Done was replaced by Northern Ireland prospect Jamie McDonagh, and he put United 1-0 ahead when he knocked home the rebound after a shot was blocked.
Diego De Girolamo then went close before Joel Purkiss, formerly of Sheffield FC, almost forced an equaliser at the other end. But George Willis denied him bravely, taking a knock in the process before being cleared to carry on by United's physio team.
De Girolamo, who recently signed a new deal at Bramall Lane, went close again in the second half, his deflected shot rebounding off the home crossbar but United went 2-0 up soon after when McDonagh grabbed a second.
CJ Hamilton, who had replaced Stefan Scougall moments earlier, crossed for McDonagh to finish from six yards and double United's lead at the Autoworld Arena.
McDonagh then enjoyed two chances to complete his hat-trick, after being teed up by De Girolamo and James Wallace, but the hosts reduced the deficit when captain Danny Holland headed home past Willis.
United twice hit the bar, from a De Girolamo free-kick and McDonagh's header, but restored their two-goal lead when Dom Calvert-Lewin tapped home.
De Girolamo wrapped things up with United's fourth from the penalty spot to wrap up a comfortable victory, ahead of tonight's trip to Macclesfield.
United Starting XI: Willis, Cartwright, Whiteman, K Wallace (capt), J Wallace, Scougall, Reed, Done, De Girolamo, Dimaio, Calvert-Lewin.
