Nigel Clough has admitted this could be a pivotal week in Sheffield United’s season with Scunthorpe making the trip to Bramall Lane tonight and Crewe following up on Saturday.
Two wins should give the Blades a little breathing space but with in-form Barnsley in seventh, currently three points behind their South Yorkshire rivals, and Lee Johnson’s men hosting United next week, there is little room for error in the race for a play-off spot.
Sheffield United: Howard, Freeman, Brayford, Basham, Harris, Coutts, Holt, Baxter, Murphy, Done, S Davies.
Scunthorpe United: Daniels, Clarke, Boyce, Canavan, Williams, Evans, Lundstram, Townsend, Adelakun, Madden, van Veen.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Hakeeb Adelakun, a former youth team player at West Ham, impressed as a second-half substitute during the recent meeting between these two teams at Glanford Park. Born in Hackney, London, the 18-year-old made his professional debut for the visitors at Tranmere Rovers in December 2012 and became the youngest player to represent Scunthorpe in the process. The centre-forward has scored three goals in just over 30 appearances so far this season.
When Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United drew 1-1 at Glanford Park earlier this month, it was the eighth time in 22 meetings a fixture involving these two teams had ended in stalemate. United enter tonight’s re-arranged League One contest hoping to record their ninth victory over the visitors from Lincolnshire while Mark Robins’ side have beaten the hosts on six occasions. However, they have lost their previous two outings at Bramall Lane, scoring only one goal and conceding five in the process.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Mark Heywood - The West Yorkshire based official will be overseeing Sheffield United for the first time since their victory at Shrewsbury Town in 2013 when Michael Doyle was among five players cautioned. Doyle was also booked when Heywood, who has not overseen a match at Bramall Lane for three years, took charge of their visit to Hartlepool four months earlier.
