As The Star has revealed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would prefer Henderson to spend another year in South Yorkshire before installing him as his first choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Although United were initially minded to go along with that plan - the 23-year-old emerging as a key figure in both their climb out of the Championship and then ninth placed finish in the Premier League last term, a number of factors have prompted them to explore alternative options - with former Steelphalt Academy graduate Aaron Ramsdale now the subject of serious interest following AFC Bournemouth’s relegation.

If Henderson does accept an improved and extended deal, then the amount United would be forced to contribute towards his wages is likely to prove prohibitive. Likewise, suspicions that Ramsdale could prove unobtainable if Bournemouth make an immediate return to the top-flight has also convinced Wilder to make his move now.

After discreetly approaching Henderson’s representatives about his proposal earlier this month, Solskjaer could invite them to open formal talks before the weekend in an attempt to plot a course out of the crisis.

Henderson first joined United on loan in the summer of 2018 and, when that temporary arrangement was renewed, thrust himself into England contention with a series of superb performances for Wilder's side.
