Walker, who made 37 appearances for United after progressing through his hometown club’s youth system, scored the only goal of the game when Pep Guardiola’s side triumphed 1-0 at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

It was a result which sees United enter this weekend’s match at Chelsea having taken only a point from their first seven games of the campaign - a sequence which manager Chris Wilder acknowledges will increase the “noise and nonsense” surrounding his injury hit squad.

However, speaking after the contest, Walker revealed United possess one of the qualities required to start climbing the table soon before explaining why he refused to celebrate his strike.

“They’re well drilled,” he said, referring to Wilder’s team. Everyone in there knows their position and they’re a tough team to break down but luckily enough I came up with the goal.”

“My mum and dad live here, so if I’d celebrated I’d have got a lot of stick. I’m a Sheffield United fan too, so I couldn’t celebrate.”

Wilder, who left United to join Tottenham Hotspur in 2009 before returning to South Yorkshire for a spell on loan, became the world’s most expensive defender when he was purchased by City three years ago. He has previously spoken of his desire to finish his career with United, once Guardiola decides he can leave the Etihad Stadium.
