Guardiola’s reigning champions ran out 2-0 winners to inflict United’s first defeat away from home since January, but that hardly told the full story as United outplayed their illustrious hosts for much of the game.

Lys Mousset had a goal ruled out by VAR before City’s controversial first came after ref Chris Kavanagh collided with John Fleck.

Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0 and Guardiola said: “Today I realised - I already knew it but when you experience it yourself it's better - why Sheffield (United) are in the position they are in and didn't lose one game away.

"It was an incredibly tough game because we played...one of the most physical teams in the Premier League and we won it so a big compliment for the team again."
