'Looks short of confidence', 'Taken out of the firing line' - Player ratings from Sheffield United's defeat from Tottenham Hotspur

Sheffield United were very much second-best all across the field this afternoon as they suffered their latest defeat of the Premier League season, at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Title-chasing Spurs ran out 3-1 winners at Bramall Lane, although David McGoldrick did get on the scoresheet for the Blades.

Here’s how we rated United’s players today.

Had a nervy moment early in the game but was left horribly exposed for Spurs' opening goal, showing his audible frustration at his side's defending. Did well to keep the ball out of the net under pressure from Kane and right under his own crossbar. Looks a player short of confidence even in his handling and commanding of his area.

Jayden Bogle 5

Poor defending for Spurs' opening goal, allowing Aurier to outjump him and head home from a corner while barely getting off the ground himself. Had a shot blocked in the first half as United looked to get back into the game, and could maybe have done better with a back-post header from McGoldrick's cross.

Chris Basham 5

Handed one of his toughest assignments of the season against Spurs' frightening front three. Couldn't do enough to prevent Kane adding Spurs' second but did well to prevent Son scoring almost straight from kick-off after the Blades got back into it. No shortage of effort or drive but wasn't allowed to get forward as usual. Replaced by Sharp.

John Egan 5

Involved in a defensive mix-up when he and Ramsdale went for the same ball, which rather summed up United's troubles at the back of late. Picked up a booking late in the game - his fifth of the season - which means United will have to face Manchester United without him once again.

Ethan Ampadu 5

Lined up on the left of United's defence again after his impressive display against Newcastle, but didn't hit the same heights - albeit against much better opposition. Later shifted into midfield and is likely to start again at Old Trafford - either in defence or midfield - given Egan's suspension and Norwood's display here

Enda Stevens 5

Returned to the side immediately after recovering from injury, with Ben Osborn picking up a knock. Was more involved in the opening few moments of the second half than the entire of the first, where he wasn't allowed to get forward at all by Spurs.

Ollie Norwood 4

Took a yellow for the team as he brought down the breaking Kane after a shot fell kindly for the England man. A crisp ball through fashioned a chance for McGoldrick but he lost the ball too easily in midfield, leading to Kane making it 2-0. Didn't cover himself in glory for Spurs' third goal, either, and was taken out of the firing line with just over half an hour to go

John Fleck 5

Tested Lloris's handling with a well-struck shot from long range, on his right foot. Made McGoldrick's goal with a peach of a cross and got stuck in when needed, as well.

John Lundstram 5

Booked for a foul on Bergwijn after United switched off from a long kick from Lloris. Tried to take responsibility and make things happen, including a well-struck curling effort from outside the box, but couldn't find that bit of quality when it needed with his crossing or passing

David McGoldrick 7

Had a couple of sights of goal early on - one when Rodon cut out the danger and another when Dier blocked after good work from Norwood. Got his goal in the second half with a good header from Fleck's cross

Oli Burke 6

Had United's first real purposeful attack when he won the ball back near the halfway line and was then fed by McGoldrick, before seeing his shot blocked by Dier. Gave United a constant outlet with his pace and ran his blood to water before being replaced by Brewster with about 20 minutes to go.

Subs

Kean Bryan 5

Came on for Norwood, with Ampadu shifting into midfield

Rhian Brewster 5

Replaced Oli Burke with 20 minutes of normal time remaining

Billy Sharp 5

Came on for Basham as United chased a way back into the game. Worked hard and struck a volley well, but couldn't direct it on target.
