Liverpool are ready to slug it out with Sheffield United

Sheffield United have been told Liverpool are equipped to grind out a win when they play host to Chris Wilder’s squad at Anfield, rather than simply relying upon the firepower which has seen them establish a double digit lead over their nearest Premier League rivals.

Jurgen Klopp’s team overwhelmed opponents at the beginning of the campaign, scoring 17 goals in their opening six outings of the top-flight campaign.

Despite smashing four past Leicester City on Boxing Day, Liverpool displayed a different side to their character when Wolverhampton Wanderers travelled to Merseyside last weekend; edging past the visitors 1-0 following a combative performance.

With Klopp complaining about the demands the festive fixture schedule has placed upon his players, there are suspicions that could set the template for a more pragmatic approach during the second half of the season.

“If it would be easy to win the amount of games we have done then more teams would have done it,” the German said, reflecting upon Liverpool’s unbeaten record in the competition.

United have prepared for tomorrow’s match in eighth, only two points behind fifth-place, after losing in controversial circumstances to Manchester City. They produced a combative display when Liverpool appeared at Bramall Lane in September, before eventually succumbing 1-0.

“We will be facing teams who will be fighting for the league for all they have,” Klopp said. “And the fight for the Champions League and Europa League has opened up again.”
